The Disc Doctor

Got some old records that need cleaning up?

Send them to the disc doctor and get them restored to their former glory.

Scratched or dirty records that crackle and pop, and even records that jump can ofen be repaired, and no one does it better than the disc doctor.

Mick Janes is a life long collector of records and what he doesn’t know about vinyl is probably not worth knowing. He charges 25% of the book value of a record on a no win – no fee basis. That means if he can’t repair or restore the record to your complete satisfaction, then you don’t pay.

FAQ’s  Mick answers a few of the most common questions...

What’s the best way to clean my old records?

The best way to clean records with surface dirt and grime is with a solution of warm fairy liquid and water.  Using a soft toothbrush gently go over the record following the direction of the grooves. Don’t leave the record to soak as this may damage the label.

This is only a way of cleaning the grime out of the grooves, it does not get rid of the crackles and pops or scratches you often get in old records.

To have your records restored to a nice gloss shiny finish and a better sound quality you have to have them done by a specialist.

Is there anything I can do with a warped record?

Unfortunately it is difficult to do this as vinyl has a memory and will always go back to the warped shape.  There is a way of doing it by putting it between two pieces of glass. However, it is complicated and very rarely successful.

What’s the best way to store my records?

The best way to store records is in a proper record storage box. Stored upright in good card covers, not too loose and not too tight. Obviously they should be kept well away from any heat source such as central heating radiators.

How can I find out if my records are valuable collectables?

There are many books on the market and the monthly magazine The Record Collector has regular price guides and valuations.

  • The Rare Record Guide (For British Singles, L.P’s and E.P.’s).
  • Manship’s USA price guide for soul 45’s.
  • Manship’s U.K. Soul 45rpm price guide.
  • Goldmine price guide to 45 rpm for American records by Tim Neely.
  • The Northern Soul Top 500 by Kev Roberts

Do You Clean and Restore LPs and 45’s?

I am more than happy to look at any record 45/LP and tell you if it can be restored.  I have cleaned many scratched and dirty records that have been in storage for years, restoring them to a playable condition.

It has taken me years to perfect the way that I clean and restore records and I have many customers who are happy with the results.
