The Howard Mallett
Soul Club - Cambridge
Running parallel with Wigan Casino and many other northern soul nights, the Howard Mallett became a regular haunt for many rare soul fans in Cambridge during the mid seventies. The pioneering work of the organisers helped put the club on the northern soul map and many memorable live acts appeared there including, JJ Barnes, Johnny Johnson & The Bandwagon and Robert Knight.
Tony Dellar, Max Rees and Roger Stearn were the regulars on the decks and they all have their own interesting stories about this legendary venue, just click the links to their profiles at the bottom of this page.

John and Skip Peanuts and Max Are you in this picture?
It was Irish spinning, Stephanie dancing, Steve Whitby talking (no change there then), Max selling original records for a quid each and Pete Syrotjinski trying to pass off dubious white label copies of Gloria Jones' - Come Go With Me.
It was Tony playing The Silhouettes and
Tomangoes, Maggot and Gatesy doing their bit to keep the entire
pharmeceutical industry going. You couldn't give away a copy of the
Carstairs - It Really Hurts Me Girl.
It was Wendy, Liz, Melanie and Karen, Nick, Steve 'spinner' Franklin, Peanuts and Austin, Vaughan 'the prawn' Allanson. Smasher, Sharon, Mush and Max. It was High Waist Baggies, Solatios, Leather Bomber Jackets and Ben Shermans.
It was Brut for boys and Charlie for the girls - a cool pub snack was chicken and chips in a basket and multi coloured trimphones were all the rage. Ice on the inside of the bathroom window and every other car was a Ford Cortina.

Most of all it was a great time to be growing up with some great friends and fantastic music. If you want to add any of your photos, comments or memories to this page, just send us an email.
