The Most Successful Female Group Ever

In June 1964 Holland Dozier and Holland came up with Where Did Our Love Go. The writers picked Diana Ross as lead singer because of her wider appeal to the pop audience, with Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson on backup vocals soon becoming a trademark sound for the group. This single was originally intended for The Marvelettes, but was rejected by lead singer Gladys Horton who described it as ‘silly nonsense’. It became a defining record for The Supremes and to some extent Motown Records. Spending fourteen weeks in the charts and two weeks at number one, it is a classic moment in pop / soul history.
