Review of Soul @ St Ives by Mick Cooper

Mick 1975 - proving that sun glasses are always a cool fashion item

I'd waited some time before returning to St. Ives, 29 years to be precise.

Always my favourite nighter venue, more so then cleggy or wigan so my expectations for this one were high, so high I just knew that nothing could compare to my memories.  Ooops!  wrong, there were faces there that I knew so many years ago, most looking a bit older. Mix these with the friends I have made since re-joining this scene of ours and to me, it was like going home.

The venue speaks for itself, excellent huge dance floor (just needed the talc, and got it!!!), balcony to chill on and the theatre, oh the theatre, such memories are made of this. That's the very, very dark room that was the oldies room all those years ago.  The decks were against a different wall, the old seating that used to be collapsed and pushed against the wall had gone but the darkness, the music and the atmosphere was still there.

The d.j.s, Tony Warot, just like he had never been away, great set and even greater sense of humour, Mick Smith, don't remember him from original nighters but he didn't put a record wrong, neither did Andy (smudge) Smith.

Mr Dellar was (as he always has been) enthusiasm personified, not just a good vinyl-jockey but entertaining and slightly immersed in his own reality which was great to share.  Ginger, 'nuff said, he knew what to play and played it.

I had to leave after Ginger had finished but the 97 mile trip and 29 year wait was worth it, well worth it.  Out of all the things St Ives had going for it this night, the most precious were the people who attended, just like going home.  Get your tickets early for next years do, Saturday October 13th 2007.
